The most important character in the story The Bluest Eye is Pecola Breedlove. Pecola is a frail girl which makes her appearance look like she is very tired and she doesn’t smile often. Pecola is very afraid of things, she cries easily when there are some problems with her, as the author wrote "I got to the porch and stood there with the Mason jar of water. Pecola was crying. What you crying for? Does it hurt? She shook her head". In Pecola’s mind, there is one idea. This idea she has is that she prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be beautiful, because the book mentioned that she thought of "Pretty eyes. Pretty blue eyes. Big blue pretty eyes. Morning-glory-blue-eyes." Pecola thinks that blue eyed children can devastate all others, because the author wrote, "whose love for its blond, blue eyed children can devastate all others." Pecola has many different manners toward people. For example, when her friends ask her for some advice, she always makes no suggestions, because the author wrote, "What you want to do, Pecola?" "I don’t care," she said. "Anything you want." When she doesn’t like what her friends are talking about, she would always sigh, because the book said, "Oh," Pecola’s voice was no more than a sigh." Pecola gets different reactions from others. For example, Frieda and Claudia were full of awe and respect for Pecola, because the author wrote, "We were full of awe and respect for Pecola. Lying next to a real person who was really ministratin was somehow sacred." Another example, she gets friendliness from friends, because the author wrote, "Frieda and I walked behind them, surprised at Maureen’s friendliness to Pecola, but please." These are the sketches of Pecola’s appearance, actions, ideas, manner, and reactions of others.
Pecola Breedlove is important to the novel because Pecola is the main character of this novel. The title of this novel characterizes Pecola’s desire for a blue eye. Pecola lead the causes and effects of this novel. She is important because this novel is the characterization of the tragic life of Pecola. I would not like to be the main character because I don’t want a tragic life like Pecola. I don’t want to be rejected from society by both my friends and my family. If I’m a girl, I don’t want to be persecuted by my father, who rapes me and makes me impregnated. Therefore, I don’t want to be Pecola. I would not like the main character for a friend because I don’t want my friends to have a tragic life like Pecola. I only want my friends to be happy and not like Pecola that has a tragic life. I don’t want my friends to be persecuted by their fathers. I don’t want my friends to be rejected from society by both their families. I don’t want my friends to have a desire to change their eye color because I want my friends loyal to their country and their culture. Therefore, I would not like the main character for a friend.
