THE RAVEN ESSAY
The poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe is a very good poem I have read. The poem is about the poet feeling very tried and sad in a December midnight when he thinks about his passed wife Lenore. Then he hears someone rapping at his door, and goes to open the door, but he sees no one. Later, he hears someone rapping at his door again. This time when he opens the door, he sees a raven, whose flies in and sits on the head of a statue over the door. The poet asked for its name, the raven says "nevermore", when the poet tells the raven to leave, but the bird refuses and remains forever above the poet’s door.
The mood of this poem is suspenseful and mysterious. "That I scarce was sure I heard you, -here I opened wide the door; -Darkness there and nothing more". The mood is suspenseful and mysterious because when the author opened the door, there is nothing outside and he wondering and doubting who’s rapping at the door. This creates the mood of the poem suspenseful and mysterious. There are many literature devices in the poem such as repetition, alliteration, assonance and metaphor. The ending words of each stanza are repetition such as "more; evermore; door; and lore". "Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before is an example of alliteration. "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore" is an example of assonance. In addition, "but with mien of lord or lady is an example of metaphor. These are the literary devices in the poem. The setting of the poem is in the chamber and the door of a December midnight. "Once upon a midnight dreary". In one midnight, while he sitting somewhere in his chamber taking a nap. "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood over there and looking around. The setting of the story is in his chamber were his door.
I think the poem is very difficult to understand because there are many old English words used by the author. The poem has many rhyme words makes it easier to remember and easier to read. I like the mood because it makes me feel suspenseful and mysterious. I think the poem has many true feelings that are expressed by the author and makes me a little sad. In addition, I really like this poem.
