REGENT TASK III

Parent’s reactions to their children’s growing up and becoming independent are depicted in Carl sandburg’s "A Father Sees His Son Nearing Manhood" and in Phyllis McGinley’s "First Lesson". In these two poems, I will discuss the similarities and differences between father’s attitudes towards their sons in Sandburg’s poem and their attitudes towards their daughters in McGinley’s poem.

There are several simiarities between the poems. Both of the poems uses metaphor in their poems which Sandburg uses metaphor on "Storms" and McGinley uses metaphor on "dragon seeker". Both of the poem’s themes are about fathers whom very care very much about their children, father’s attitudes towards their children and gives advice to his children. Both of the poems mentioned the mood and characteristics of the father’s feeling toward their children. Both of the poem’s authors uses specific literary elements to convey their point of view. In addition, both poems’ mood shows an understanding feeling. These are the similarities between the two poems.

There are several differences between the poems too. In Sandburg’s poem, it is about a father’s point of view to the son, but McGinley’s poem is about a daughter’s point of view to her father. In Sandburg’s poem, the father mentions Shakespeare and others famous male because he wants his son to understand them, but McGinley’s pome didn’t mention any famous women. In Sandburg’s poem, the author uses repetitions to tell his son sometimes force is necessary and solitude is not harmful, but McGinley’s poem didn’t uses any repetition. In McGinley’s poem, the author uses the figurative language "likes your first shoes with heels on, like your first bicycle" to show her point of view, but Sandburg didn’t uses any figurative language. In McGinley’s poem, McGinley uses rhymes "mind; find; threat; get; fall; all; learn; and return" and similes "like your first shoes with heels on, like your first bicycle" in the poem, but Sandburg didn’t uses any rhymes and similes in the poem. In McGinley’s poem, the poet’s general attitude toward her father is understanding, but Sandburg’s general attitude toward his son is concern and cares. In addition, the most important message of this poem is that fathers are often overprotective of their daughter, but message of Sandburg’s poem is that fathers always give opinions and suggestions to their children about life, the future, and ways of being in society. These are the differences between the poems.

Parent’s reactions to their children’s growing up and becoming independent are depicted in Carl Sandburg’s and McGinley’s poem. By reading these two poems, I have learned what are the feeling of a daughter toward her father and the feeling of a father toward a son. I think I would give some of the opinions in Sandburg’s poem to my son. In addition, I unlike the father in McGinley’s poem, I think I would not be overprotective of my daughter after I read the two poems
